Noosa Piping & Drumming Workshop.
30th September to 2nd October 2011

Jori Chisholm has emerged as one of the world's premier professional pipers.  Three times winner of the US Gold Medal Piping Championship, winner Open 'A' Piobaireachd at the Cowal Highland Gathering, and was a member of the world-famous Simon Fraser University Pipe Band, playing with the band when they won the World Pipe Band Championships in 2001 and 2008. He has appeared as a soloist or pipe band member on over 20 recordings, including his long-anticipated, full-length solo studio project 'Bagpipe Revolution', released in 2008 to rave reviews and an Album of the Year nomination by Pipes Drums magazine.
First tenor drumming at the age of 11, Tyler played with Kincardine Scottish Pipe Band under the tuition of Craig 'Hoss' Colquhoun before joining Milton Optimist Pipe Band as a snare drummer. Tyler then joined the 78th Fraser Highlanders Pipe Band as a tenor drummer in 1995 at the age of 13. While at the Frasers, Tyler has won three World Best Bass Section Championships as well as numerous Canadian, United States and North American Best Bass Section titles. In solo competition, Tyler has excelled by winning every top award available in North America.

Come and join us for a long weekend of piping and drumming tuition, and fun, with four of the world’s finest pipers and drummers . All levels welcome, the instructors are experienced at teaching beginners through to the highest grades of pipers and drummers. Building on the success of the last 2 years we will also be offering some more advanced training in both piping and drumming this year.

PIPING & DRUMMING TUTORS
Richard Hawke is one of New Zealand’s most successful pipers, having won the Highland Piping Society of London Gold Medal (Oban), the Braemar Gold (twice) and Silver Medal (twice), and the Dunvegan Gold Medal. Within pipe bands Richard has gained 4 National Grade 1 championships, 9th in the Grade 1 world championships. He is currently pipe band director of St Andrew’s College Pipe Band and the Canterbury Caledonian Pipe Band.

James Laughlin, a professional side drummer and highly sought-after instructor, has been drumming since the age of 10. He started at his  local primary school in Northern Ireland and joined the Monkstown-Mossley Pipe Band. Within four years of starting his pipe band drumming career he won the World Solo Juvenile drumming championships on two occasions, 2000 and 2001. He moved to Canada in 2004 to play with the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band and has been playing there for 5 years. He has enjoyed many successes with the band including two World Drum Corps title's and the2008 World Pipe Band Championships.

Programme for the Workshop


All participants receive formal instruction over 2 1/2 days. Sessions are structured according to skill level and interest; music classes cover basic to advanced exercises, practice technique for solo players and bands, instrument maintenance and tuning.

There is discussion of everything from music theory and composition to dress and deportment.

Part of each day will be devoted to small-group or full-band critique, with an emphasis on band ensemble. Bands of all sizes and skill levels are encouraged to participate. The instructors provide opportunities for working on solo competition tunes and scores, learning new Piobaireachd, or just getting advice on any aspect of your piping or drumming.

There will be a public Concert of the Saturday night at which the Instructors and students will be asked to play at. The Concert is voluntary for all students but the preparation for it is part of the weekends course instruction.

Friday 30th September:

08:30 - 09:30 am:
Check-in

09.30 - 5:00 p.m: Lessons

6:30 p.m. Meet & Greet. Venue yet to be advised. Informal get together for instructors, students, family and friends over some food and drinks.

Saturday 1st October:

8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m:
Piping and drumming classes, including band sessions, individual lessons, and Piobaireachd.

4.00pm to 5.30pm: Rehearsal and tuning up for concert


7:30 - 9:30 p.m: Public Concert by workshop instructors plus willing students.

Sunday 2nd October:

08.30a.m. - 12:00 a.m:
Piping and Drumming classes, including band sessions, individual lessons, and Piobaireachd.

12.00 am: Massed Bands, issue of certificates and close.

Music Programme

The massed band tunes will be given to all students and the instructors will select on the day. Music for the weekend will be issued on registration.


A native of Lake Oswego, Oregon, Jori started piping at age 11 with instruction from Colin MacKenzie. The Canterbury Caledonian Society’s Pipe Band was formed in 1902 and has been in Grade one in New Zealand since 1967. Over the past 5 years the band has been rebuilding and strengthening to remain a top level Grade 1 band in New Zealand and the world.
Tyler transferred to The House of Edgar Shotts & Dykehead Pipe Band in 2004, fulfilling a childhood dream of his to play alongside Drum Major Jim Kilpatrick. He won the British Drum Corps Championships with the drum corps in his first season. In 2005, Tyler helped the band to win the top awards for both band and drum corps at the World Pipe Band Championships. Away from the band, Tyler is a qualified tenor drumming adjudicator with the PPBSO and regular master class instructor at workshops throughout North America, South America and Europe. His teaching resume is very diverse, international and of a very high standard. James' students range from 7-70 and from beginner to professional.  He was chief drumming instructor for two years at the prestigious St Andrews College in Christchurch, New Zealand. Here he had a major impact not only on the school pipe band, but to all of the South Island of New Zealand. He has been teaching individual student’s since his mid-teens and has enjoyed the experience of teaching at the famous Piping Hot Summer Drummer School, 2008 being his fifth year on the teaching faculty. James’ recent solo successes include winning the British Columbia Pro Drumming Aggregate 2007, and making the semi-final’s at the Adult World Solo Drumming Championships.
